 | | King Khaled International Airport was inaugurated under the auspices of the Custodian of the Two Holy Sanctuaries, King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, on 12 Safar 1404 A.H. corresponding to 26 November 1983 A.D. The airport represents the air gate and the beating heart of the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the center of the national air transportation system. It was established with a maximum capacity to meet the increasing needs of the international and domestic air transportation of Riyadh City. In harmony with the civilizational environment of the Kingdom, the airport's location reduces noise and air pollution, protects Riyadh City from the safety risks and agrees with the planned growth of the city. Its design conforms to the Islamic heritage and the natural beauty of the desert. | | The airport occupies an approximate area of 225 square kilometers and encompasses all the main utilities and facilities of the airport like the shopping centers, the royal pavilion, the air cargo building, the post office, the private aviation building, the mosque, the control tower, the aviation square that contains the two parallel runaways each measuring 4200 meters in length, in addition to land passages and aircrafts parking spaces. The peripheral buildings of the airport include: the central administration complex, the public safety complex, the main firefighting station, two branch firefighting stations, the communication building, the meteorology center, the supply and central kitchen building, the land services equipment maintenance workshops, the utilities maintenance sections complex and the internal residential compound for families and bachelors.
